I settled down and watched Alfred Hitchcock's REAR WINDOW this morning. My wife gave me a box set of Hitchcock movies for Christmas, and I've been wanting to watch REAR WINDOW for some time. I was pretty sure it would help me with the opening of TGTGT Berlin, and it turned out that I was dead wrong. The movie wasn't really relevant to the plot point I was thinking about, which is probably going to take place in the opening chapter of the book.
But the exercise was still useful, and relevant in another way that surprised me. I'm facing up to a plot hitch in my standalone at the moment - nothing major, but something I aim to fix to make the story stronger - and meantime I found myself aware of some problems in Hitchcock's movie. Mostly it was about timing (the police seemed to turn up within seconds of an emergency call being placed), but there were a few other niggles, such as the idea that Jimmy Stewart's camera flash would be sufficient to protect him from a murderer. That said, I still enjoyed the movie and I figure if the "Master of Suspense" can use a little dramatic licence here and there, then maybe I can cut myself some slack until I finally come up with the right solution for the plot hurdle I'm facing up to.
Yeah. Maybe.
